Jorge Calandrelli Master Class

On Saturday, April 30, veteran composer, arranger, conductor and producer Jorge Calandrelli was featured at the ASMAC Masterclass. Entitled “From Ballads to Bossa.” It was an interesting and informative day. 50 interested and enthralled audience members listened intently and throughout the class had their many questions answered.

This 3-hour presentation opened with a 5 minute musical overview of some of the amazing performers that Calandrelli has worked with over the years in his various roles. The class consisted of the discussion of 10 arrangements by Calandrelli, which covered a broad spectrum. Some scores were viewed on the giant screen while the recorded music played vocals by Calandrelli’s clients, including Tony Bennett, Barbra Streisand, Stevie Wonder, Ella Fitzgerald and Placido Domingo, and instrumentalists Arturo Sandoval, Eddie Daniels, and Chris Botti.

Calandrelli spoke about his composing and arranging process and a great variety of other subjects. His music enraptured his audience, and at the conclusion he received a standing ovation.

ASMAC Board member Sylvester Rivers produced and moderated the Master Class, and Kim Richmond handled the technical preparation. Copies of the scores viewed and heard in the Master Class were handed out to all attendees. A DVD of the class will be available in the ASMAC store in the near future,. The class materials will be included, with the exception of the scores, which will not be available. (Also in the ASMAC store is a previous Master Class offered by Maestro Calandrelli, which is packaged with the class materials, AND a luncheon interview/presentation from a few years ago.)
