ASMAC’s 2017 Golden Score Awards at the Hilton Universal City received several standing ovations during the evening. From the moment guests arrived and walked the red carpet, it was a who’s who in the music industry – all being greeted by ASMAC President Kim Richmond and VP & Event Chair Gayle Levant. From the two legendary Golden Score honorees – best friends Charles Fox (with wife Joan) and Paul Williams (with wife Marianna) – to the amazing and very witty host, composer Michael Giacchino, the cocktail reception was abuzz with old and new friends greeting each other and sharing their personal music stories. Previous awardees Alf Clausen, Conrad Pope and Bill Holman were all interviewed on the red carpet by ASMAC’s hostess with the mostest Nan Schwartz. Following close behind were some of the performers from the evening – Jack Jones, Calabria Foti and Mervyn Warren. Actors Hal Linden, Fred Willard and Ilene Graff also spent time on the carpet along with Love Boat creator Jeraldine Sanders.
Mingling during the silent auction and reception were several ASCAP reps including Shawn Lemone, Mike Todd, Dan Foliart (who also spoke about ASCAP Prexy Paul Williams), Dean Kay, Gustavo Santaolalla, and Arthur Hamilton; BMI’s Doreen Ringer Ross and Chris Dampier, plus Ginny Mancini, Artie & Sharon Butler, Bonnie Cacavas, Eunice David, Carol Goldsmith, Joel Iwitaki, Richard Kraft, former AFM President Tom Lee, and current Local 47 VP Rick Baptist; John Richards, Reggie Wilson, Booker White, Duane & Francois Tatro, Peter & Loree Myers, ASMAC VP Charles Fernandez, Jill and Dan Ferguson, Bonnie Janofsky, Raymond Torres-Santos, Alfred Music’s Dave Black, and so many more.
The awards program led off with video retrospectives of the honorees’ careers, followed by wonderful performances by Calabria, Mervyn and Jack presenting just a few of Paul and Charlie’s memorable hits – from Killing Me Softly and Evergreen to Love Boat and Ready to take a Chance Again. Giacchino expertly introduced congratulatory video messages sent by several collaborators and friends, including Norman Gimbel, Frank Oz, Richard Carpenter plus a personal letter from Barbra Streisand. A surprise guest – Gonzo from The Muppets – (aka Dave Goelz) dedicated a special song to Paul.It was truly an incredible evening – that will long be regarded as one of ASMAC’s best and most entertaining Golden Score Awards. Proceeds of the evening will benefit ASMAC’s educational programs, including scholarships for talented young arrangers, composers and orchestrators.
