ASMAC Town Hall: The Business of Creating Music

29 November 2018

The ASMAC Committee for Arranger’s Rights will host a town hall style meeting addressing the advancement of rights for the creators of music arrangements and discuss the definition of various industry roles including orchestration, music preparation, synthesizer production and other digital music creation giving credit where credit is due.

The event will feature committee chair Richard Niles with Ira Hearshen and Hummie Mann (via Skype). Special guests include industry specialists Elizabeth FinchRichard Bronskill and Marc Mann

The discussion will outline a number of issues that have faced arrangers since the dawn of the 20th Century, resulting in arrangers becoming ‘Invisible Artists’. The first is to reach an agreement with the AFM that the Arranger becomes a line-item on Union contracts, separate from Orchestrator. A number of more controversial issues will be raised, promising an exciting meeting. As Niles says, “Hold on to your hats, folks!”

Niles has written books and articles about the art, craft and the business of the musical arranger including, The Invisible Artist: Arrangers in Popular Music 1950 – 2000
